FreeInfoSociety.com
During my freshman year of college, I started working on this educational website as a hobby. It began operating at a loss of roughly $100/month, but after the introduction of Google AdSense advertisements, it began making considerable profits. It currently receives about 30,000 unique visitors every day. The best part about this business is that it does not require any effort from me to make money, which leaves me free to work my regular job and complete schoolwork.
Many of my articles have been republished by notable websites and included in educational programs. One of my articles on the Japanese Internment during World War 2 is included in Compass Learning's history program for high school students. For example, Yale University's Engineering Department is using my bio on Lee De Forest. Another example is the Central-Carver Legacy Museum, which uses my bio of George Washington Carver.
The website was originally created in pure HTML with a Macromedia Flash interface, but I eventually abandoned that to pursue a database-oriented design. I decided to use PHP and mySQL to power the website, since it would make maintenance a lot easier. I wrote a lot of PHP scripts for the website, including a random featured pages script for the front page and an elaborate "rewards" system that allows content contributors to accumulate points that they can redeem for educational items. It is also worth mentioning that I wrote nearly 700 articles on various subjects to provide content for the website.
Sample Articles:
Bio of Lee De Forest: Inventor of the Triode
Bio of John Pershing: Commander of US Forces in World War I
The Rutherford Experiment
The Battle of Rorke's Drift
